Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second person to walk on the Moon, has set a definitive timeline for the first human footsteps on Mars: 2040. In a recent interview, Aldrin, now 93, said that with current technological momentum, the first 'Human Martians' could arrive at the Red Planet within the next two decades, but he stressed that the journey depends as much on Earth-bound education as on rocket science.
Aldrin's forecast aligns with a broader push across the global space community. SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, continues to develop the Starship system, while NASA's Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon as a stepping stone. China's space agency and The Mars Society are also advancing prototypes and studies. Yet Aldrin's message goes beyond hardware: he argues that the true enabler for interplanetary travel is a generation of young people equipped with the skills and curiosity to solve problems we haven't yet encountered.

STEM Education as the Critical Path
Aldrin's emphasis on education is not abstract. He recalled how the Apollo missions inspired a generation of scientists and engineers, and he wants that effect replicated. 'We can only get there if we start investing in future generations,' he said. In a speech at the Frontiers Conference, former President Barack Obama noted that America's strength lies in including every potential innovator, regardless of gender or background. He warned against leaving 'a budding genius unavailable to cure cancer or come up with a new energy source because they were languishing in a sub-standard school.'
Aldrin's personal story underscores his message. 'Sometimes I can't believe this lucky kid from New Jersey got to land and walk on the Moon,' he said. 'Work hard and keep reaching for the stars.'
